Portraiture is probably the oldest and most vital genre in visual art and it has maintained its vitality through all of the upheavals in art history. I think it endures because we are endlessly fascinated and curious about ourselves and each other. My exploration of portraiture uses the techniques and devices of the past and present -- from renaissance to pop art, digital art and social media. Which techniques I use are determined by how they compliment the subject or deepen its meaning. The idea to use such-and-such a device on a particular work seems to be spontaneous, as if it came from nowhere.
